Election Procedure

The DSTC elects officers every two years for two-year terms. Below is the list of candidates for the 2017-2018 term, along with their biography and position statements. The election procedure is detailed in the Policies and Procedures.

Voting is restricted to DSTC active members (also called voting members), to whom voting instructions will be sent by email. There are 33 active members as of October 2016.

Schedule

  • November 18, 2016 Voting directions emailed to voting members, and voting begins.
  • December 5, 2016 Election deadline for active members to submit votes.
  • December 7, 2016 Election results announced at DSTC meeting at Globecom in Washington, DC, USA.

Candidates and Statements

Chair

Brian M. Kurkoski, Japan Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (JAIST), Nomi, Japan

Brian Kurkoski CV

Candidate Statement I have made contributions to signal processing for magnetic recording and flash memories, particularly in coding schemes for both. As DSTC Chair, I will ensure that we continue the activities of organizing data storage tracks at ICC/Globecom, the best paper awards, and target another JSAC issue. I have served the DSTC as Secretary for four years, and I am well-versed in the practice of making these DSTC activities occur on a regular basis.

Vice-Chair from Industry

Xinmiao Zhang SanDisk Corporation, San Jose, California, USA

Xinmiao Zhang CV

Candidate Statement I have more than fifteen years of experience on data storage, in particular error-correcting coding and signal processing for data storage, in both academia and industry. I developed a number of VLSI architectures that brought down the complexities of non-binary LDPC and soft-decision Reed-Solomon and BCH codes by more than an order of magnitude. I will work on increasing the visibility of the Data Storage Technical Committee in industry and involving more researchers from companies developing flash memories, next-generation storage class memories, and distributed storage.

Vice-Chair from Academia

Shayan Srinivasa Garani Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, India

Shayan Srinivasa Garani CV

Candidate Statement The DSTC is a small, yet focused organization in promoting advances in data storage theory and practice. Having been in the data storage industry leading various technological efforts all the way from inventions towards their deployment into real systems, I have learnt that the connections between theory and practice are very vital to get ideas fructify into products from advanced research. There is a tremendous scope for advancements within data storage technologies with synergistic efforts from academia and industry. I have been an active member of the DSTC within IEEE ComSoc society and a senior member of the IEEE. Recently, I lead a successful IEEE JSAC special issue (Sep. 2016) focused on physical data storage with a set of excellent guest editors. Also, I lead the IEEE DSTC awards committee for 2015. As such, I would like DSTC efforts to be more visible within ComSoc and IEEE.

I would like to have the following agenda during my office term:

  1. Bring synergies within academics and industrial counterparts for greater participation within IEEE DSTC activities such as publications (journals, conferences), discussion forums and so on.
  2. Interface and effectively engage DSTC within IEEE ComSoc.
  3. Help engage students within academics to connect with industry and other academic groups within the storage community. We need to set this wave of activity to expose our students to this exciting field.
  4. Work with the DSTC chair and the other DSTC members to develop a process and sustain our activities.

Secretary

Jeongseok Ha Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST), Republic of Korea

Jeongseok Ha CV

Candidate Statement I would like to run for the position of Secretary of Data Storage Technical Committee (DSTC). I am currently an associate professor at Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST), Korea. I would like to make contributions to DSTC as a secretary.

I have more than more than ten years’ experience on investigating advanced coding techniques for storage devices using non-volatile memories and magnetic mediums. In my technical career, I have published more than 80 journal and conference papers and more than 30 US and Korea patents. I have been actively attending most of the DSTC meetings in ICC and GLOBECOM. Currently, I am serving on the DSTC awards committee as a co-chair.

My recent contributions for DSTC and IEEE are listed as follows:

  • IEEE member for 11 years
  • Technical Program Committee (TPC) Members
  • IEEE International Communications Conference (ICC) 2013 – 2015
  • IEEE International Symposium on Personal, Indoor and Mobile Radio Communications (PIMRC) 2015
  • IEEE GLOBECOM 2011 – 2015
  • IEEE Vehicular Technology Conference 2012, 2014
  • Co-chair of 2015 DSTC awards committee

I hereby pledge to serve DSTC by putting continuous effort to support various events of DSTC in collaboration with other officers of DSTC. I would appreciate your support and vote.

Treasurer

Qi Qi Broadcom Limited

Qi Qi CV

Candidate Statement I am running for relection of the Treasurer position of the Data Storage Technical Committee (DSTC). I served as Treasurer of DSTC in 2016. I also served on symposium technical program for WCNC2013, ICCVE2013, ICNC2014 and ICCVE2014-2016. I have worked in the data storage industry for 6 years. Throughout my academic study and industry career, I have been continuously supported and mentored by IEEE colleagues and industrial peers. I am looking forward to give back to this great community.

Data storage technologies are the key components in the future development of information technology. IEEE COMSOC DSTC has an unique role in fostering the growth of data storage technologies. The success of DSTC depends not only on its technical strength, but also on the sustaining financial health of the organization. I am strongly committed to continue maintain financial integrity, and to improve the financial sustainability of IEEE COMSOC DSTC.
